DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES: The Department of Social Services (DSS) is dedicated to the permanent safety and well-being of children who have been abused or neglected in a family setting.
They work first and foremost to keep families together. To achieve this goal, DSS provides family-based services to assist parents in better caring for their children. For those children who are unable to remain at home because of severe abuse or neglect or who are at risk for abuse and neglect, DSS provides temporary out of home care through foster care, group care, or residential programs.
-Abuse and Neglect: DSS responds to reports of abuse or neglect 24 hours a day. The Department of Social Services becomes involved if there is any concern that a caretaker, a parent, stepparent, guardian or other person responsible for a child may be abusing or neglecting a child. Teachers, day care providers and babysitters and others outside the family may have strong concerns about a child's welfare.
-Adoption Program: For information on the adoption program that is best, call 1-800-KIDS-508.
-Foster Care Program: The Department of Social Services Foster Care Program helps the children of families who have not been able to keep their youngsters safe from harm. Foster Care temporarily provides a substitute extended family during a time when neither parents nor other extended family members can meet a child's needs
-Domestic Violence: Child abuse and domestic violence often occur together. The DSS Domestic Violence Unit is a statewide initiative designed to enhance the Department's ability to protect children experiencing family violence. The best interests of children cannot be separated from the best interests of their mothers. That's why a team of Domestic Violence Specialists works side-by-side with Child Protection staff in DSS area offices across the state. For Information about the DSS Domestic Violence Unit, call (617) 748-2333.
-Teen Program: The DSS adolescent services unit works with youth who are in our care. We stress positive development and offer youth an opportunity to take an active role in the types of services they receive. Teen participation and empowerment are priorities to us. Through our many different services and programs, we offer support and understanding - as well as information and opportunities for growth. All kinds of programs and special events for youth are available. We also have lots of opportunities for peer support and leadership. For More Information, call the Teen Peer Hotline: 1-800-238-7868. **The DSS Central Office is at: 24 Farnsworth Street Boston, Massachusetts 02210 (617) 748-2000**
