Einstein's posthumous career as a pitchman.

Marguerite brought in an article about how Einstein's name is being used to sell toys,

computers, and other items.   The article also reviewed why Einstein is so famous both as a

popular image (humanity, humor, and hair) and as a revolutionary scientist.

Einstein is famous for giving quantum physics a "kickstart" with his view that light consists of

particles (instead of waves).  He is also famous for the equation, Energy equals Mass times

the Speed of Light squared.

We reviewed a lot of vocabulary (posthumous, kitsch, notoriety, Zionist, pitchman, revenue)

 and exponents.

Student

Female                   16.00 -- 17.99

I learned that Zion is a lost homeland - either for Blacks or Jews or anyone else.

I plan on doing a presentation on Monday.

Discussion: "Define the word 'modern'.  How does it relate to art, culture, economics and

politics?  Is it a 'relative' term or an 'absolute' term?  In your opinion, when did 'modern

times' begin?"

A lot of time was spent contrasting the terms "relative" and "absolute". We also went through

certain pivotal dates (ranging from 1453 to 1945) as possible "start dates" for "modern

times"

April then made sure everybody had a print-out of a Salvador Dali painting, and after she

gave some Dali biographical details and quotations, people wrote.  Most people wrote for

about 25-30 minutes straight.

Student

Male                     45.00 -- 59.99

Today I wrote a paper about Salvador Dali[,] a painter.

Female                   45.00 -- 59.99

The Roots of the Civil War: GED oriented review:

Advance Organizer/Discussion Question:  "With hindsight it is possible to see the beginning

of the divisions that lead to the US Civil War of 1861-1865 in the divisions between the

Federalists and Jeffersonians during the early Republic."

The class was able to identify Federalists as "Northerners", and "interested in commercial

and industrial development".  They were also able to identify Jeffersonans as "Southerners",

"Slave owners", Plantation Owners" and interested in "farming and agriculture"

Some interesting questions were also raised: "Why was Great Britain willing to take the lead

in ending the international slave trade?" and "Why were Northerners ultimately willing to

fight and die to end slavery in the US?"

We also spent some time going over the "Alien and Sedition Acts" GED items writing out

why certain multiple choice items were not supported by the readings.  (Some people thought

that was WAY to boring.  Others found it worthwhile and enjoyable.)

Student

Female                   16.00 -- 17.99

Group time was boring.

Male                     16.00 -- 17.99

You need to figure out something for the group time that doesn't make us wanna sleep more than we

already are.

Female                   45.00 -- 59.99

I think the work we are doing in group time is a lot of help looking over the questions within the G.E.D.

Female                   45.00 -- 59.99

I personally feel that the [way] you [taught] class today is the correct way of teaching. If another

student knows all this[,] let her take the GED test NOW.

Male                     18.00 -- 24.99

I like the way the class went today.

the "process of elimination" we also worked hard to identify positive reasons to support our

choice for the "best answer".

I also worked on math problems in multiplying decimals with zeros.

GED Review: Free Speech in the Federalist Era: The Alien and Sedition Acts

First, we did some vocabulary review and discussion on words brought up by learners such

as "explicit" v "implicit",  and "cynical."  We also went over the filibuster controversy

currently in the US Senate while reviewing the 3 branches of the Federal Government.

A lot of the GED review was based on vocabulary.  There was an attempt to stress that

"reading" a possible definition in context INSTEAD of the word can help a thinking person

figure out the best definition in a multiple choice test.

Equivalent Fractions (and Solving Proportions)

The non algebraic way of solving these "seems" easier at first, but the algebraic way (cross

following a careful, rule oriented, "step by step" procedure.)

Both methods involve doing multiplying and dividing in the right order.

Student

Male                     45.00 -- 59.99

Female                   45.00 -- 59.99

HIV and AIDS

Timothy made a very well organized and well-informed presentation on HIV and AIDS.  He

connected it to many of the human body systems (Digestive, Reproductive, Circulatory) as

well as to previous studies of Cells, Viruses, and Proteins.  There was a lot of frank,

professionally informed, discussions of human sexual behavior.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus works by attacking the T4 Helper white blood cells

which normally tell the other white blood cells what to do to protect against infections.

Blood to Blood exposure to an HIV infected person is the most effective way of transmitting

the virus.  Next to blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and mothers' milk are the human secretions

most likely to carry the HIV.  That's because they contain the T4 Helper white blood cells

(the target of the virus).  Semen needs white blood cells to protect the sperm cells.  Vaginal

fluids contain white blood cells to protect the vulnerable tissues in that area of the body.

Mother's milk contains white blood cells to protect very newborn infants who have not yet

developed their own immune system.  (Saliva does not carry white blood cells because it has

its own ability to break down foreign materials..)

Student

Female                   25.00 -- 44.99

Timothy came today and [taught] us about HIV and AIDS.  How and why is transmitted - what work[s]

The guiding questions were about "modernity" and "tradition".  Is "modern" a relative term

"story" are more traditional?
