A Memorial to Lincoln
The Lincoln Memorial is supported by 36 Greek columns which represent the 36 states that existed at the time of Lincoln’s death. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. It is a memorial to Abraham in memory of the Civil War.
The most important issue facing the nation during
Abraham’s time was slavery. Slavery existed throughout the South. Whether
slavery would expand into the new states of the west was a question on
everyone’s mind. Although Lincoln was defeated in the senatorial election
against Douglas, the 1858 debates made him famous across the country. “I
believe I have made some marks which will tell for the cause of civil liberty,”
said Lincoln. He would be elected President.
