Get Started with Reading, Writing, and Math
Everyone starts somewhere – and this could be your moment
If you’re an adult who struggles with reading, writing, or math, you’re not alone. It’s more common than most people realize – and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
At The Literacy Project, we help adults build basic literacy and math skills they need for everyday life. We know it takes courage to reach out. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
You don’t have to learn alone – and it’s never too late to start.
Basic literacy skills include the ability to read, write, speak, and understand simple information. These basic literacy skills help you complete everyday tasks, such as reading signs, filling out forms, writing messages, and understanding spoken instructions. Building strong literacy skills is the first step toward greater independence and lifelong learning.

“It’s never too late to try.”

Why it matters
- Reading and math are part of everyday life
- Gaining these skills builds confidence, independence, and new opportunities
- No one should have to rely on others for basic literacy skills or everyday math
- Everyone deserves the chance to learn at their own pace, with respect and support
Our classes are small, welcoming, and designed for adults who are learning from the very beginning.

Behind the scenes:
The courage to begin
Your support helps adults take the first brave step.
Learning to read or do basic math and literacy as an adult takes extraordinary courage. At The Literacy Project, we meet people at the very beginning – and help them build a foundation that changes everything.
You can help someone feel seen, supported, and strong
Foundational literacy and math skills are the roots of everything else – career readiness, parenting, health, independence. Many adults come to us having hidden their struggles for years. We offer a new beginning.
Your organization can help us reach learners who need us most.
We work with local organizations to identify adults who need support and offer classes in trusted, community-based locations.
Help us tell those stories.
When an adult learns to read or understand numbers for the first time, it changes their life – and often, their family’s too.
