Real life, real reasons
Joe came to The Literacy Project ready for a new chapter. After years of working, he returned to the classroom to strengthen his reading skills. He started in our basic skills class and, step by step, earned his GED. Today, he continues to lead by example as a proud member of our Board of Directors.
Charo set out to earn her high school equivalency with one goal in mind: to set an example for her children. She wanted to be able to help them with homework, especially math. Through her time in our classes, she discovered something unexpected: she loves math. Now, Charo is enrolled at a local community college, studying to become an adult basic education teacher—just like the ones who supported her at The Literacy Project.

What is the HiSET?
The HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) is one of two major high school equivalency exams used in Massachusetts and across the U.S. It covers five subject areas:
- Reading
- Writing
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
Not sure whether the HiSET or the GED is right for you?

You can take the HiSET on paper or computer, and you can take the subjects one at a time. It’s often a good option if you prefer flexibility, if you haven’t been in school for a while, or you need to fit your HiSET test preparation around work and other commitments.
