Real Life, Real Reasons
Joe came to The Literacy Project ready for a new chapter. After years of working, he returned to the classroom to strengthen his reading skills. He started in our basic skills class and, step by step, earned his GED. Today, he continues to lead by example as a proud member of our Board of Directors.
Charo set out to earn her high school equivalency with one goal in mind: to set an example for her children. She wanted to be able to help them with homework, especially math. Through her time in our classes, she discovered something unexpected: she loves math. Now, Charo is enrolled at a local community college, studying to become an adult basic education teacher—just like the ones who supported her at The Literacy Project.

What Is the GED?
The GED (General Educational Development) is a high school equivalency test recognized across the United States. It’s made up of four subject areas:
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Reasoning Through Language Arts (reading and writing combined)
- Science
- Social Studies
If you’re interested in preparing for the GED test for free, please get in touch with us. We’ll help you understand what to expect and how to study effectively.
You can take the GED on a computer in official testing centers or sometimes online (with restrictions). It’s not the same as the HiSET – which has five sections and is often available on paper. Both are valid high school equivalency credentials, and we can help you figure out which is right for you.

Why It Matters
- Without a high school diploma or equivalent, many job training programs, apprenticeships, and employers won’t even let you apply.
- Many GED learners are already capable – they just need a credential to prove it.
- Getting your GED can boost your income, confidence, and options in life.
And you don’t have to do it alone. Our free GED programs in Massachusetts offer help with study skills, test strategies, and the encouragement to keep going.

Behind the scenes:
The Power of Finishing What You Started
Your support helps adults reclaim an opportunity.
The GED is more than a test. It’s a milestone. For many adult learners in our free GED programs in Massachusetts, passing it means opening a door that’s been closed for years – one that leads to better jobs, training programs, or college.
You can help someone get their second chance.
Many of our students are balancing work, caregiving, and uncertainty. They come to us not because they failed – but because life pulled them in another direction. Now, they’re ready to return – and we’re here to meet them.
Your organization can expand access and impact.
We work with community testing centers, employers, and educators to support learners through the GED process – and beyond. Every credential earned strengthens not just the individual, but the whole community.
Help us share their stories.
Because when someone finishes their GED, they gain more than a certificate.
They gain momentum.
