Our Literacy Programs and Classes
At The Literacy Project, we offer free literacy programs for adults to help build reading, writing, math, and life skills. Whether you’re just getting started or working toward your high school diploma or career goals, we have a class for you. If you’re looking for a free literacy program that meets you where you are, you’re in the right place.
Basic Literacy and Math Skills
Start here if you want to improve your reading, writing, or basic math. These classes are great for beginners or anyone who wants to feel more confident in everyday life.
Pre-High School Equivalency
Get ready for high school-level work. These classes build your skills and prepare you to enter a HiSET or GED program.
High School Equivalency (HiSET & GED)
Pass the HiSET or GED test and earn your high school equivalency diploma. This can open the door to better jobs, training, and college.
Career and College Readiness
Take the next step towards work, training, or college. These classes help with resumes, applications, study skills, and more.
All of our classes are part of our free adult literacy courses. We work at your own speed, and we take however much time we need to help you build the skills that matter most to you. There’s no pressure to learn quickly. There’s just friendly support for as long as you need it.

The different skills we work on in class
You will have your own reason for being here, and you’ll have your own skills which you’ve developed from all your life experiences.
We’re here to help you move from where you are now to where you want to be, by helping you grow the skills you need to succeed. Here are some of the most common skills we help with. You can click on each one to find out more about each skill:
Writing skills
We help with all kinds of writing—from learning to write notes, letters, emails, to creating longer stories or college essays.
Reading skills
Whether you’re just starting to read or want to understand harder books and work materials, we can help you get there.
Math skills
We support you with everyday math, like counting and measuring, and we can also help you prepare for math tests like the GED or HiSET.
Computer skills
We teach the basics, like typing, and we also help with things like email, online forms, and job searches.
Communication skills
We help you speak and listen with confidence, whether you’re having a conversation, joining a class, or getting ready for a job or college interview.
“I had been out of school for years, and I was nervous about learning again. But the teachers here were so kind and patient. Now, I have my HiSET diploma and I’m starting college!”

Behind the scenes:
Helping Us Deliver Our Free Literacy Programs for Adults
At The Literacy Project, we know that earning a high school equivalency diploma is a life-changing step. For many adults, preparing for the HiSET isn’t just about passing a test – it’s about opening new doors: to better jobs, college opportunities, and a stronger sense of self. Each learner comes with different strengths, challenges, and goals – and we meet them where they are.
Your support helps us keep these free literacy programs available in communities that need them most.
At The Literacy Project, we know that earning a high school equivalency diploma is a life-changing step. For many adults, preparing for the HiSET isn’t just about passing a test—it’s about opening new doors: to better jobs, college opportunities, and a stronger sense of self.
You can help someone take the next step.
Our HiSET prep classes are small, focused, and flexible. We don’t use a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Each student has a personal learning plan shaped around their goals. In one class, learners may be working on essay writing, reading comprehension, or math and numeracy skills—all with the goal of moving forward.
Your business or organization can be part of the story.
These free adult literacy courses are supported by trained volunteers who offer both academic guidance and encouragement. We also work closely with community partners, funders, and supporters to expand access across our region.
Help us share their stories.
When learners succeed on the HiSET, the impact goes beyond one classroom. Graduates build confidence, pursue new opportunities, and show others what’s possible.
