Spotlight on Innovation: The Literacy Project Featured at First Literacy’s Annual Event

Last week, First Literacy hosted its annual Spotlight on Innovation in Adult Basic Education, bringing together educators, program leaders, and adult learners to share new ideas and approaches that are shaping the future of adult education in Massachusetts.

We were proud to have Spencer McIntyre, Advisor and Instructor at The Literacy Project, participate as a panelist at this statewide event.

During the discussion, Spencer shared insights from The Literacy Project’s Participatory Action Research Project, a student-led initiative supported by a First Literacy grant. He spoke about how the project empowered students to design interview questions, conduct research, and meaningfully contribute to improving recruitment, enrollment, and persistence in rural adult education programs.

“Students at all levels could come to a workshop and feel as though they were participating in the project and meaningfully contribute,” Spencer shared. “Many students really enjoyed the project and are already asking if they can participate again.”

This collaborative research model not only strengthened writing and literacy skills but also gave students a voice in shaping programs designed for them.

The event highlighted the many creative and effective programs making adult education more accessible. We are grateful to First Literacy for continuing to support innovation across the state and for recognizing the importance of keeping adult education responsive to learners’ needs.
