February 2024 News

From our Executive Director:

February is here, and the time has certainly flown by since becoming the Executive Director in June. I have come to learn so much about our organization and more deeply connected to the communities we serve. As the only provider of Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency preparation for adults and young adults living in Franklin and Hampshire counties, I have a deeper understanding of the vital role The Literacy Project has in lifting up the lives of those in our communities. Additionally, I have been able to experience the unequivocal commitment that our team has to our mission and our students.

Executive Director Colleen Kucinski

Enter the doors of The Literacy Project and you will find the most amazing students. They are eager to learn and bravely take the leap into our classrooms trusting us to help them reach their goals. You will also find teachers, staff, and volunteers filled with respect and admiration for those they teach. They are students’ biggest champions, lifting their spirits and confidence throughout their journey with us. Education at The Literacy Project is not a transaction of subject matter imparted from teacher to student. It is a partnership where students and teachers create a community that empowers students to own their success and take charge of their future.

In just a few short months the academic year will close and graduation will commence. I look forward to sharing more highlights and student success with you then. As supporters of The Literacy Project’s work, I am very grateful for all you give us through your time, talents, and treasure. We couldn’t do it without you.

Warmly,

Colleen Kuckinski

Executive Director

Student Spotlight

Sagrario Turner attends classes at The Literacy Project (TLP) site in Northampton. She has three school-aged daughters and recently moved from Eastern to Western Massachusetts. Once her family was settled, she sought out The Literacy Project because she has a goal to complete her high school equivalency credential (HiSet/GED).

"My writing and reading comprehension skills are improving thanks to the ELA class, I never thought I would enjoy history and social studies as I am doing it right now. What I have been learning at this institution extends beyond the classroom, being able to help my daughters with math problems and their general homework encourages me to continue my education and achieve additional knowledge and skills. I appreciate with immense gratitude the labor of teachers and staff at The Literacy Project."
